Genovate Therapeutics was preparing to run a pivotal Phase II/III trial for its lead gene therapy - a single-dose AAV treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II. But treating children with a rare disease meant engaging not just patients, but families across languages, devices, and care routines. Genovate needed more than a reporting tool. They needed a secure, child-friendly mobile app that helped caregivers stay on track with symptom logging, physical therapy, and virtual check-ins, all while meeting the strict requirements of global trial regulations. Scalability partnered with Genovate to design a mobile-first experience that balances compliance with compassion, connecting families and clinical teams in real time, from anywhere.

What we did

Clinical data capture ended at the clinic but the trial didn’t.

While Genovate’s EDC systems worked well for site investigators, caregivers at home had no structured way to log symptoms, track medication adherence, or communicate between visits. The lack of a dedicated mobile tool created blind spots that risked data gaps, missed milestones, and disengaged participants.

The core issues:
- No symptom logging interface designed for non-clinical users
- Missed reminders for medication, physical therapy, or lab visits
- High dropout risk due to low digital engagement
- Multilingual families struggled with usability and consistency

To bridge the gap, Genovate needed a secure mobile solution built for caregivers, not coordinators.

Scalability worked alongside Genovate’s operations, regulatory, and patient advocacy teams to design and develop the GNT  Companion App a HIPAA-compliant mobile application tailored for pediatric trials.

Built for both iOS and Android, the app included:
- Daily symptom tracking with emoji-based scales for younger users
- Medication reminders and adherence logging
- Secure video uploads to monitor physical therapy progress
- Real-time push notifications for check-ins, lab visits, and clinician messages
- Multilingual onboarding and caregiver switching (e.g. mom, dad, nurse)

The app was designed to reduce anxiety, support flexible care roles, and keep trial data flowing, even outside the clinic.

From passive reporting to proactive engagement.

Since launch, the app has transformed the caregiver experience, making trial participation more predictable, interactive, and accessible. With built-in reminders, visual trackers, and easy communication channels, families became active partners in the therapy journey.

The platform not only improved adherence and symptom capture, but also strengthened Genovate’s reputation with trial sponsors and regulators as a company invested in digital-first, family-centered care.

The GNT Companion App is now being expanded for use in post-marketing programs and other rare pediatric trials.
